Huawei Gadget Company Ready to Expand Wings to the Electric Car Industry

Chinese technology company Huawei is reportedly planning to launch several electric car models under its own brand which will be released before the end of this year.

Business Insider reported that Huawei is in talks with Chang'an Automobiles, a Chinese state-owned automotive company, and another Chinese auto company, BAIC BluePark New Energy Technology.

The discussion discussed the use of factories owned by the two companies to produce electric xehicle (EV) or electric vehicles.

Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business group that led the company to become one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers, has reportedly shifted his focus to EVs.

The manufactured EV will target the mass market segment which suggests Huawei's electric car will be sold at an affordable price.

The news was obtained from another source who declined to be named because this discussion is private.

This plan seems to be one of Huawei's strategies to explore strategic changes after America blocked it for almost two years.

At that time, Huawei's cellphones were banned from circulation in the US and its allied countries because it was suspected that the Chinese government could use them to spy on them through its 5G network.

However, a Huawei spokesperson denied the company's plans to design EVs or produce Huawei-branded vehicles.

According to the source, Huawei will only be a digital car-oriented component provider.

On the other hand, Chang'an and BAIC BluePark have so far refused to comment on this issue.

If the news above is true, then Huawei's ambition is in line with Beijing's vision to promote environmentally friendly vehicles to reduce air pollution in China.

Sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) or new energy vehicles including batteries and fuel cells are targeted by China to reach 20% by 2025.

Huawei itself has developed a number of technologies for EVs over the years including in-car software systems, sensors for cars, and 5G communications hardware.

In addition, Huawei has also established partnerships with car manufacturers such as Daimler AG, General Motors Co, and SAIC Motor to develop smart car technology.

In fact, according to Reuters, Huawei has also accelerated the recruitment of engineers for car-related technology since 2018.

The electric vehicle-to-vehicle charging method, battery-checking mechanism, and two other inventions made by Huawei have earned it four patents at the end of February 2021.

With all the technology that Huawei has developed in the EV sector coupled with the opportunity to open the gates of America's permits for it, it is not unusual for Huawei to finally want to develop its own EV car.

So will Huawei really swerve into the electric car realm and restore US confidence in it? Let's just wait!
